　東レは１１日、羽毛によく似た機能のポリエステル中綿「エフティドリームサーモ」を開発し、これを使用した掛け布団などの寝具を商品化する、と発表した。今期（２０１４年３月期）は１４億円、来期は２２億円の売上げを見込む。

　新素材は細さや断面の形状が異なる原綿をブレンドした中綿で、繊維同士の間に微細で複雑な空間が形成されることから、優れた保温性がある。
非常に柔らかく、羽毛と同等の軽さ、かさ高で、弾力性や回復性があるという。
洗濯が可能という合成繊維ならではの特徴もあり、清潔感を保ち、洗濯後も風合いが持続するという。

　中国の鳥インフルエンザ発生で、羽毛原料が供給不足に陥ったことなどから、羽毛価格は高騰。今年３月までは昨年同期比で約２割高の１キロあたり４０００円台で推移していたが、４月にかけて、中国人民元建ての価格が１．６倍に。円安も相まって、国内での価格は同５０００円台程度にまで急騰しているとみられる。
　寝具業界では、安定的に調達できる素材へのニーズが高まっており、東レは新商品でこの需要に応えたい意向だ。
