湖の底では、春先に繁殖するケイソウが白色の層となり、秋から冬にかけては粘土鉱物が堆積するために黒色の層ができる。これらの白層と黒層が一対となり、まるで年輪のような縞をつくるのである。年縞にはケイソウの他にも花粉・プランクトンなどの微化石や火山灰・黄砂にいたるまで過去の環境を知るためのヒントが多く含まれており、
年縞の形成は湖ならではの現象で、堆積速度の遅い海ではどんなに分解能をあげても千年単位の縞がやっとである。考古学でよく用いられる放射性炭素を用いた年代測定法でさえ百年ほどの誤差がでてしまう。やはり、一万年前の誤差がわずか数年という年縞は、環境と文明の関係を探るのにうってつけである。
日本には地殻変動によって湖盆が継続的に沈降し、海水が進入して湖底が無酸素状態になりやすい潟湖が多く、そこは四季の季節の変化が明白で、水温の変化もはっきりしているので年縞の形成にとても適している。
